Oleg Holosiy made this painting, White hairy, with oil on canvas, and it’s BIG: 3 by 4 meters! I can just imagine him, brush in hand, standing in front of it. Look at that palette of dark reds, browns, and yellows. The whole canvas has a kind of volcanic, unsettling feel, and the figures feel like they're emerging from the depths. I wonder what Holosiy was thinking when he made this. There's a kind of raw, almost primal energy here. It reminds me of some of the weirder figurative stuff that was happening in Europe in the early 80s. The "hairy" title suggests a kind of tactile sense – you can almost feel the texture of the paint, the roughness of the forms. It makes me think about how painting can be this really physical, embodied thing. And how all painters are in conversation with each other, working through similar problems and ideas, pushing the medium in new directions. Ultimately, painting is a form of expression that embraces ambiguity and uncertainty.
