"Cafe Deutschland" looks like it was made with oil on canvas. I can imagine Immendorff in the studio wrestling with these figures and forms. There's so much going on here, right? A swirling cacophony of figures painted in bold colors. Look how thick the paint is in some areas, almost sculptural! And those jagged lines cutting through the composition? They feel like lightning bolts, adding to the sense of chaos and unease. The colors—a mix of blues, browns, and oranges—create a jarring, almost nauseating effect. I wonder what Immendorff was thinking when he made this? Maybe he was trying to capture the fractured state of Germany at the time. Or perhaps he was exploring the darker aspects of human nature? It kind of reminds me of Grosz or Beckmann. These artists are in a constant conversation across time, reacting to each other, challenging each other. Ultimately, painting is about asking questions rather than providing answers. And this piece certainly leaves me with a lot to think about.
