This cane handle, made from soft-paste porcelain, was crafted at the Saint-Cloud factory sometime between 1693 and 1766. Porcelain is a very particular material. Its capacity to take fine detail, combined with its pure white color, made it especially appealing for luxury objects. Note how the maker has exploited these qualities here, modeling the handle as the head of a fish, and adding delicate painted details. Fish were a popular motif in the 18th century, often symbolizing wealth and prosperity, reflecting the rising merchant classes of the period. Saint-Cloud was one of the first factories in France to successfully produce porcelain, which had previously been a closely guarded secret of Chinese manufacturers. The discovery of the formula and the industrial processes to make porcelain in Europe fueled a craze for the material. This handle, therefore, represents a fusion of material innovation, decorative refinement, and social aspiration. It shows how even a functional object like a cane could become a canvas for artistic expression, and also social aspiration.
