Curator: Joe Tilson's "S - Semiologie" presents a layered image, utilizing printmaking and collage techniques. Editor: My first impression is one of disruption—the contrasting strips bisect the repeated image, creating a fragmented, almost rebellious feel. Curator: Absolutely, those strips – one a section of a map, the other emblazoned with the Cuban flag – cleave through the image of Che Guevara, a symbol of revolution. It speaks to the complexities of ideology. Editor: The halftone printing gives the Guevara images a mass-produced, almost commercial feel. Then the assertive diagonal slashes break up any easy reading of the piece. Curator: The map, with its suggestion of place and movement, juxtaposed with the strong symbolism of the Cuban flag, points to the journey and geography inherent in revolutionary thought. Editor: It's a fascinating study in contrasts – the graphic versus the cartographic, the iconic image versus the abstract line. Very effective.
