Curatorial notes
This graphite sketch of a building and trees was made by George Hendrik Breitner, though we don't know exactly when. It's all about the bare bones of seeing, isn't it? Look at these lines, how they dance and meet, trying to capture the world. There's such tenderness in these marks. It's like Breitner is trying to build a building out of thin air. See how the lines converge, giving a sense of depth. It's a whisper of a place, a fleeting thought captured on paper. The texture of the page becomes part of the drawing itself, like the ghost of an image. It reminds me of some of Agnes Martin's grid paintings, that same quiet search for structure and form. Both of them use such a light touch to find something essential. Art is never about perfection, it's about the conversation, the questions we ask along the way.
