This photograph captures the gravestone of Nicolaas and Aleida in the Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk. It's a study in sepia tones, where the details emerge like memories from the depths. Look closely at the stone carvings – the way light and shadow play across the surfaces, revealing the textures and contours of the forms. You can almost feel the weight of the stone, the coolness of the surface. Notice the anonymous nature of the photographer who, like the stonemason, has left their mark without a signature. The whole image reminds me of some of Agnes Martin's grids, a tribute to the departed, yet it also speaks to something larger. The photograph offers an experience that invites us to slow down, to contemplate the passage of time, and to recognize the interconnectedness of all things.
