Louis Ducros made this view of the old Minerva temple on the island of Syracuse with watercolor and pencil. Look closely, and you'll notice that the crisp lines and carefully modulated washes celebrate the play of light on the temple’s stone facade. The architecture looms large, but the small figures in the foreground give us a sense of scale. Ducros was fascinated by the texture and weight of the stone, the way it seems to absorb the sunlight, and the sheer amount of labor that went into its construction. Think of all the quarrying, carving, and placement of the stones required to build such a monumental structure. The temple speaks of ancient history and a civilization predicated on human toil. Ducros has captured not just the image of the temple, but a reflection on the enduring power of material and the labor embedded within it. It bridges the space between a picturesque view and a meditation on the social context of its creation.
