Frank Mason painted “Pink Roses in Brandy Glass” with oil. I love the almost casual way he built up the forms, like the roses, with these loose, visible brushstrokes – you get the feeling he's really enjoying the process of painting here. Looking closely, you can see how the darkness of the background is built from layers of translucent paint, creating an incredible sense of depth, like looking into a void. And the way he captures the light reflecting off the glass is pretty amazing. It's not about perfect representation; it's about capturing the essence of light and form. Check out the lower, white rose. See how the petals are a flurry of short, confident strokes that somehow conjure the softness of a flower. This piece reminds me a little of Fantin-Latour, but with a slightly looser, more painterly touch. You can see a painter really grappling with process and making something quite beautiful.
