C.A. Jensen painted this child's portrait in oil on canvas. The dark background and direct gaze emphasize the innocence of youth. The rosy cheeks suggest vitality, a motif echoed across centuries. Consider the ancient Roman practice of painting cheeks red on statues to signify life force. This emphasis on vitality transcends mere representation; it taps into a primal yearning for health and vigor. Similarly, the child's direct gaze, while seemingly simple, is reminiscent of Renaissance portraits where a subject’s eyes were the windows to the soul. The dots on the dress, which at first appear innocuous, are an ancient symbol of abundance and fertility, seen in Minoan art and later, in varying forms, in 18th-century decorative patterns. These elements engage viewers on a deep, subconscious level, evoking emotions tied to our collective memory and history. Thus, the portrait is not merely a depiction of a child but a canvas where symbols from different eras converge, demonstrating the cyclical nature of visual expression.
Comments
This portrait of a child painted in 1834 by C. A. Jensen is on canvas. The original canvas is no longer visible from the back due to the later addition of a lining canvas. Lining is a method of conservation that involves reinforcing a painting from the back with a new canvas. The lining on this painting is a wax resin lining made by adding a heated, liquid mixture of beeswax and resin to the new canvas. The additional canvas is attached to the original canvas with an iron. In Denmark the tradition of lining canvas paintings using this method has existed since the early 1900s. The method peaked in the 1960s, and disappeared entirely during the 1980s. Today we no longer line paintings with wax resin because we know that the method makes paintings particularly sensitive to humidity.
