This is Gustav Heinrich Naeke’s "Lagernder männlicher Akt nach links," or “Reclining Male Nude to the Left,” made with pen and brown ink. Naeke lived in a time when art academies were trying to define ideal beauty through the male nude. The image, however, is not about accurate depiction but about expressing artistic vision. Here, gender and artistic expression intersect as Naeke uses the male form to convey a sense of classical aesthetics, while the quick and somewhat rough lines show a move away from perfect realism and into the artist's emotional world. Notice how the reclining figure feels very different from traditional academic nudes. It suggests that Naeke was interested in pushing the boundaries of what was considered acceptable, blending personal feelings with established art styles.
