This is a forged iron arrowhead, or Yanone, likely made sometime in the 18th century by Kane Yoshi. The arrowhead's form is striking – shaped like a broad, shallow ‘V’. It would have been mounted on a shaft and propelled with considerable force. Imagine the intensity of the blacksmith’s labor, heating and hammering the metal, shaping it with precision and expertise. The arrowhead’s beauty lies in the mastery of the technique. But let’s also remember the purpose of this object. It speaks to a martial culture, one where strength, skill, and weaponry were prized. By focusing on its making, we are also reminded of the social and cultural contexts of its use. It prompts us to reflect on the labor, skill, and human conflict embedded within this piece.
