Hendrik Jozef Franciscus van der Poorten created this etching, "Slapende hond" - or sleeping dog - and yet the date of its creation remains a mystery. The image evokes a sense of quiet domesticity, reflecting the cultural values of the 19th century, which idealized home and family. Dogs, often symbols of loyalty and companionship, became increasingly popular as household pets amongst the growing middle class. I wonder if the dog is sleeping, or simply waiting? There is something about the pose, and the shadow, which makes me consider the relationship between humans and animals during this era. Was it a bond of mutual affection, or a reflection of societal hierarchies? Perhaps Poorten captured a moment of respite, inviting us to reflect on the simple, yet profound connections that shape our lives.
