Gwen John made this self-portrait, using oil paint, with a muted palette, all browns and creams. I like how the painting is all about observation, a process of becoming familiar with oneself. Look at how she's built up the surface with thin layers of paint, almost translucent, so light can pass through. See the way the shadows under her eyes are subtly modeled. It’s not about showing off, it’s about getting to know yourself. The brushwork is gentle, patient, the painting has a quietness, an intimacy. There’s a beautiful harmony in the way the colours work together, and a deep sense of observation. John reminds me of Agnes Martin, who was also interested in capturing the essence of being, both artists demonstrate how art doesn’t need to shout to be heard. It can whisper too.
