This is the second volume of "Album met honderd vogels door Bairei," created by Kōno Bairei, an artist born in Kyoto during a time of significant cultural shift as Japan opened to the West. Bairei, trained in traditional Japanese and Chinese painting techniques, navigates themes of nature and beauty which are deeply rooted in Japanese aesthetics. As an artist, Bairei occupied an interesting position; he was both a guardian of tradition and an innovator who adapted to the changing artistic landscape. Within these delicate images of birds we can find a reflection of the artist's cultural identity and the complex negotiations between tradition and modernity that defined his era. The album invites us to consider how cultural values and artistic practices are preserved, transformed, and expressed through an artist's unique perspective.
