This page, from a model book, was printed by Johann Schönsperger the Younger in Augsburg in the 16th century. These books were crucial in disseminating patterns for artisans. The image is a woodcut, a relief printing process. The areas that appear white were carefully carved away from the block of wood, leaving the design to stand in relief. Ink was then applied to this raised surface, and the image transferred to paper by applying pressure. The pattern itself is highly geometric, with repeating motifs arranged in bands. These designs would have been used as templates for embroidery or other decorative arts. The relative ease and low cost of printing allowed for the wider circulation of designs, impacting textile production and consumption during the Renaissance. The material and process speak volumes about the democratization of design in this period. It's a reminder that so-called "minor" arts have always been essential to the visual landscape.
