This anonymous still bank at the Minneapolis Institute of Art is made of burnished brass and formed into a crown-like gothic facade that I find really intriguing. I love to imagine how the artist crafted this thing. I'm not sure how the artist or craftsman came to make this; what inspired them? And why this peculiar form? I am imagining a lone inventor, working away in their studio, puzzling through solutions. The copper surface has that kind of glow, doesn’t it? It looks like something slowly built up, burnished layer upon layer. The cylinder form is so clever, isn't it? I keep wondering how the artist joined it together. I imagine the weight of all those pennies and coins adding up inside... it's a great marriage of form and function. It’s almost like the gothic style of architecture is being repurposed for this humble, domestic object. It’s a very strange kind of remix. And that strangeness is super compelling.
