Here we see an andiron with cooking pots and a pair of fire tongs, crafted by an anonymous artist. Though undated, its presence in the Rijksmuseum suggests it holds significance within Dutch cultural heritage. The image of the cooking pot invites us to consider the everyday lives of ordinary people. Cooking pots were essential tools for survival, and their design and materials reflect the social and economic conditions of their time. In the absence of the artist's name, the object itself becomes a focal point, emphasizing the collective nature of craftsmanship. The cultural and historical associations of this artwork come to life when we look at the way that institutions such as museums select, preserve, and display objects like this. The meaning of this object changes across time and contexts. By studying historical records, archaeological findings, and social histories, we can gain a richer understanding of the people who made and used such items.

Centrally located in the ‘Safe House’ was a fireplace with a chimney above it. The food was cooked there and the men could warm themselves by the open hearth. When the ‘Safe House’ was rediscovered at the end of the 19th century, the andiron and the cooking pots were still in place.
