Curatorial notes

Hendrik Abraham Klinkhamer captured these Moored Ships with Sloops in a drawing. Note how the ships, with their prows and dark, shadowed hulls, dominate the composition. The ship, throughout history, has been more than mere vessel. Think of it as a symbol deeply embedded in the collective consciousness. Consider the vessel as a vehicle of souls, carrying us across the waters of life and death, an image echoed from ancient Egyptian funerary boats to Viking longships. The ship becomes a symbol of transition and hope, reflecting our dreams of exploration and new beginnings. In stark contrast to its promise, the vessel embodies our fears. Its presence evokes a sense of longing, and a poignant reminder of human vulnerability against the vastness and capriciousness of the sea. The emotional power of Klinkhamer’s ship lies in this enduring connection, engaging viewers on a subconscious level. It reminds us of the cyclical nature of symbols, forever resurfacing and evolving across history.
