'Prohibited Thoughts' was painted by Vangel Naumovski, using oils on canvas. The smooth finish almost feels like commercial illustration. The organic forms are painted with great care, their soft rounded edges creating an ambiguous space that is both dreamlike and slightly disturbing. It's as though we’re looking into the workings of the subconscious; the oil paint lends itself perfectly to these surreal shapes and hazy transitions. Naumovski lived through tumultuous times in Macedonia. Oil paint, readily available, allowed him to pursue his art despite political constraints and lack of resources. The very act of transforming readily available materials like oil paint and canvas into a portal of imagination becomes a form of silent rebellion. Thinking about the time and effort involved in such a carefully rendered painting, we can appreciate how Naumovski transformed common materials into an invitation for his viewers to explore the landscape of the mind, and perhaps, to question the limits of expression itself.
