Boris Kustodiev made "Village Boys" with oil on canvas using broad strokes of color to capture a tender moment of childhood. I imagine Kustodiev layering those strokes, building the forms gradually, the red of the boy's shirt radiating warmth, contrasting with the darker, muted tones of his companion. You can almost feel the weight of the brush in his hand, the push and pull as he coaxes these figures into being. He seems to have captured a fleeting moment, something in the posture of the children that feels immediate and real. There is a conversation happening in the brushwork, a dialogue between intention and accident, control and release. The way the dark paint pools and gathers around the edges of the figures, it's like he is letting the medium have its say, letting the painting find its own form. Kustodiev would have been part of a whole lineage of artists, each building on the discoveries of those who came before, each adding their own voice to the ongoing conversation.
