This letter to Anna Dorothea Dirks, penned by Jonkheer Jan Six, is dated July 2nd, 1925. It's not paint, but the furious black looping marks of the handwriting have a similar expressive force. I imagine the writer hunched over his desk, quill in hand, the words rushing out, each stroke a little dance of intention and impulse. What's the urgency here? What's he trying to communicate? The pressure of the nib, the drag of the ink on the page – these material qualities infuse the message with emotion. Thinking of other painters who use text as image Cy Twombly comes to mind, or perhaps the conceptual work of Mel Bochner. Six's letter is a reminder that artists across all disciplines are constantly conversing, echoing, and riffing on each other's ideas, even unconsciously. Whether writing or painting, the gesture embodies meaning, inviting us to pause, reflect, and reimagine the possibilities of expression.
