Wenceslaus Hollar created this print, “Peter and John Healing the Paralytic at the Temple Gate,” in the 17th century, a period marked by religious and political upheaval. Hollar, who lived through the Thirty Years' War, often depicted architectural and biblical scenes with a meticulous eye. Here, within the grand, colonnaded space of the temple, we find not just a depiction of faith, but also a reflection on societal hierarchies. The healing of the paralytic becomes a powerful symbol, questioning who has access to spaces of power and healing. Consider the emotional landscape: the hope of the afflicted, the compassion of Peter and John, and the silent judgment of onlookers. Hollar invites us to contemplate the intersection of faith, ability, and social inclusion, creating a space for reflection on our own biases and beliefs.
