W. Douglas MacLeod made this print of Marina di Pisa, and it’s all about the magic of lines doing the work of light and shadow. Look at how MacLeod uses hatching and cross-hatching to build up tone, those tiny marks create form, depth, and a whole mood. The reflections in the water are so delicate, they almost tremble! You can practically feel the stillness of the air. It's all about process: each line, each mark, building something bigger. And notice that little patch of scrubby grass in the foreground, it's like a tiny burst of energy, a reminder that even in a serene scene, there's always life and movement happening just below the surface. This print reminds me of some of Whistler’s etchings, the way he captured the atmosphere of a place with such simple means. It’s a reminder that art isn't about perfection, it’s about capturing a feeling, an impression, an experience.
