Claude Lorrain painted this Italian Coastal Landscape on canvas, sometime in the 17th century. The materiality of oil paint allows for the construction of layered depth and atmospheric perspective. Look closely and you’ll see how Lorrain used the inherent fluidity of the medium. Layering thin glazes of color, he worked with the transparency of oil paint to create luminous effects, capturing the soft, diffused light of the Italian coast. These optical effects were highly prized in the 17th century, and oil on canvas was considered the best way to achieve them. The laborious grinding of pigment, mixing of oils, and application to the canvas reflect a significant investment of time, skill, and resources. But note also how the painting represents the stone ruins of antiquity as if they were melting back into the earth. Lorrain was not just interested in optical virtuosity, but in conjuring a world of feeling. He treated paint as a conduit for human emotions and imaginative vision, not just a mimetic tool. In that sense, he elevated landscape painting to the status of 'high art'.
