Antoon Overlaet created "De Pannekoekenbakster" in 1747 using pen in Antwerp. This delicate drawing provides an intimate glimpse into the domestic life of the 18th century. Overlaet, working during the Enlightenment, invites us into a scene where a woman, presumably the mother, is depicted at the center, skillfully preparing pancakes amidst her family. The expressions of eager anticipation on the faces of the children, and the communal aspect of sharing a meal, highlights the emotional heart of the home. However, it is impossible to ignore the gendered division of labor present here. While the women is performing domestic duties, the men are eating or waiting to be fed. Overlaet, perhaps unintentionally, captures the social expectations placed on women during this era. This detailed drawing, while seemingly simple, opens a window into the complex dynamics of family, labor, and societal roles.
