Pyotr Konchalovsky made this Still Life with Strawberries, an oil on canvas, sometime in the 20th century. The painting feels very hands-on, doesn't it? Like Konchalovsky was really in the thick of it, pushing paint around with a sort of determined joy. You can almost feel the texture of the berries and leaves; the paint is built up, thick in some places, thin in others, and those reds are juicy! See how the strokes around the strawberries aren’t trying to be too perfect? There's a real looseness, a kind of back-and-forth, that tells you something about his process. It’s like he's less interested in getting every detail right and more into capturing the overall feeling, the sheer abundance of summer. Looking at this, I’m reminded a bit of Cezanne, especially in the way Konchalovsky simplifies the forms and flattens the space. But there's also a Russian exuberance here, a sort of wildness that feels uniquely his own. It’s a great example of how artists borrow, steal, and transform ideas across time, making something new and unexpected in the process.
