Niels Larsen Stevns made this pencil sketch of birds and a figure, probably in the late 19th or early 20th century. It’s on a page torn from a notebook, with feint horizontal lines. I love these kinds of drawings. They’re so provisional! Here, Stevns works through ideas, probably quite quickly, trying to capture the essence of a bird, its movement and character. I can almost imagine him outside, sketchbook in hand, trying to capture their fleeting presence. Look how light the marks are, barely there on the page. Some are rubbed out, changed, or redrawn. I’m curious about the lines at the top of the page. Could it be a landscape? Or is it just scribbles? It makes me think about other artists who drew birds, like Leonardo da Vinci or Albrecht Dürer, all of them trying to understand and capture nature through drawing. Artists are always having a dialogue with each other, across time. It’s like a big, ongoing conversation, inspiring each other to see the world in new ways. And in the end, a sketch like this is more about the process of seeing and thinking than about a finished product.
