Curatorial notes
Jan van Ravenswaay sketched this landscape with a hunter and dogs using graphite, capturing a scene steeped in enduring symbolism. The hunter, a figure tracing back to antiquity, carries echoes of the mythic Actaeon, who was transformed into a stag and hunted by his own hounds. This primal relationship between man and beast evokes a dance of pursuit and instinct, playing out across history. Note how the dogs, always symbols of loyalty and the wild, mirror the hunter's own duality. In earlier times, a church steeple stood as a beacon of spiritual guidance; here it is diminished in the background, overshadowed by nature, indicating a shift in cultural priorities. This motif reflects a recurring theme: the cyclical transition from spiritual to secular pursuits, which is deeply rooted in the collective psyche. Feel the emotional weight carried within these symbols—a landscape not merely observed but felt, echoing through the ages.
