Jan de Beijer created ‘Chapel in Leenderstrijp’ using pen in grey-brown ink with grey wash on paper. The composition is dominated by the angular forms of the chapel set against a soft sky. The monochromatic palette enhances the architectural details, bringing out the texture of the brickwork and the aged surfaces. The structural integrity of the chapel is emphasized through De Beijer’s precise linework, which also conveys a sense of decay. The human figures in the foreground add a temporal element, suggesting the passage of time against the enduring structure. The chapel, with its crosses and pointed arches, stands as a signifier of religious and cultural values. Notice the way De Beijer uses light and shadow to give depth, not just to the building but also to the conceptual interplay between permanence and transience. This interplay invites us to consider how we attribute meaning to historical sites, and how these meanings evolve.
