Maria Bozoky made "In a Tower in Strasbourg," a 34 x 25 cm watercolour, with what seems like a fluid, almost urgent approach, where the marks are left to bleed and blend, creating a sense of transience. It’s a world of layered washes, thin lines, and exposed paper, very immediate. Look at how Bozoky uses colour, the watery greens and blues, how they seem to drip down the page. It reminds me of those early Renaissance frescoes where the paint is applied to wet plaster, always changing, always alive. And those dark, scribbled lines around the arches, they’re not just outlining form, but adding a layer of emotional intensity, like a visual echo of the artist’s own breath. I feel the monumentality of the cathedral from a very intimate viewpoint. Bozoky shares with Grosz and Beckmann the sense of postwar society as fragmented, yet still carrying a sense of promise. It's about embracing the uncertain, the unfinished, and finding beauty in the ephemeral.
