This console clock, made by an anonymous artist, probably dates from the 18th century, a period in which timekeeping became increasingly important to social and economic life. The clock is visually striking, decorated with gilded ornamentation and featuring classical figures. The use of precious materials and elaborate designs speaks to the wealth and status of its owner. Clocks such as this one were not just functional objects, but served as symbols of power and refinement. They often had a place in the homes of the aristocracy, or the merchant classes, who also wanted to display their status. Art historians might explore archives from clockmakers’ guilds, probate records, and inventories to determine the context in which objects such as these were made, sold, and circulated. In this way, the art historian is positioned to examine the social role of art objects.
