Portrait of Princess Wilhelmine Caroline, Daughter of Frederik V, married to Elector Wilhelm I of Hesse-Kassel 1748-1816 1748 - 1816
Dimensions: 7.2 cm (height) x 6.1 cm (width) (Netto)
This is a portrait of Princess Wilhelmine Caroline made by W.A. Müller. Measuring only a few centimeters in height, this is a miniature, likely painted in enamel on metal or ivory. The incredibly fine detail would have been achieved using tiny brushes and a steady hand, building up thin layers of pigment. Miniatures like this were luxury items, personal keepsakes, and diplomatic gifts for the wealthy elite. This one captures the princess in all her finery: diamonds, lace, fur, and silk. The cost of the raw materials for her garments alone would have been considerable, not to mention the labor of seamstresses, jewelers, and furriers required to produce them. The painting itself is, in a sense, a monument to all of that work. Consider how many hands were involved in the processes shown here. The artist’s, of course, but also the artisans who made her clothing and jewels, and the miners who extracted the precious materials. It reminds us that every artwork is a collaboration, even if only one name is recorded on the front.
