Editor: Here we have Beverly Chichester's "Dutch" Doll, dating from around 1937, rendered in watercolour and coloured pencil. The flatness and almost geometrical quality of the garments really strike me. What aspects of its composition stand out to you? Curator: Indeed, let us begin by observing how the artist has approached the structure. Notice the juxtaposition of hard, angular forms in the large hat versus the softer, flowing lines of the dress. This deliberate contrast creates a visual tension, wouldn't you agree? The restricted palette also serves to unify the composition, creating a sense of balance and harmony. How do you perceive the effect of the repeated horizontal lines? Editor: They definitely reinforce that flatness, like stacked planes instead of fabric. The lack of strong shadows adds to that effect too, doesn’t it? It’s almost like a paper doll. Curator: Precisely. And what about the relationship between the doll and the secondary study of the hat? Do you think that relationship affects the structural integrity of the composition as a whole? Editor: I think the repetition helps with unity. Both studies feature similar geometric patterns and color schemes. The floating second hat also creates an intriguing sense of spatial ambiguity. Curator: It is as if Chichester is deconstructing the object, presenting its essential components for our analysis. A thorough examination of line, form, and color reveals the core artistic intentions. Editor: I see it differently now. Focusing on the shapes and the relation between the objects really makes the picture come alive. Curator: Excellent, I’m pleased that a formalist lens offered new insights.
