Curatorial notes
This is Stefano della Bella's etching, Head of a Bald Old Man with Beard, in profile to the left, possibly St. Peter. Della Bella created this print in the 17th century, an era marked by religious conflict and shifting social structures. Consider the choice to depict an aging, possibly biblical figure. In a society grappling with the Counter-Reformation, images of saints and religious leaders served as powerful symbols. The man’s advanced age and simple presentation speak to a life of experience, wisdom, and perhaps, the weight of history. Della Bella, who lived between Florence and Rome, was moving in circles that included the Medici family, as well as the French court. While portraits were often used to solidify power, here, the artist chose to explore something quite different, the human condition itself. The etching invites us to consider the narratives embedded in age and experience, and how these were valued, or perhaps, overlooked in the society of the time.
