Curatorial notes
In 1768, Simon Fokke captured with etching the Vorstelijke loge in the Amsterdamse Schouwburg voor het prinselijk paar. The prince’s box, draped lavishly, is adorned with symbols of power and grandeur, illuminated by the soft glow of candlelight, reflecting a carefully constructed image of authority. The arrangement of the audience creates a sense of communal experience; however, note the strict social stratification, each level reflecting one's social position. This structured arrangement echoes theatrical stages in ancient Greece, where the audience's role was integral to the drama unfolding before them. The columns topped with statues flanking the stage resemble those found in classical temples, subtly associating the prince with the virtues and authority of antiquity. This visual connection is not accidental; it is a deliberate attempt to legitimize and ennoble the ruling class, drawing on a wellspring of collective memory. These symbols, endlessly evolving, remind us that history is not linear, but a constant return of images imbued with new meaning.
