This drawing of a dike with a row of willows was created by Maria Johanna Goemans, who lived from 1877 to 1936. Goemans was active in a time when women artists were beginning to push against the boundaries of traditional representation and find their own voice. In this work, Goemans depicts a landscape with a quiet, understated beauty. Her choice to focus on a simple scene, a dike lined with willow trees, speaks to a desire to find the extraordinary in the ordinary. There is something about the quiet stillness of the landscape that allows for an emotional and personal connection. The loose sketch-like quality of the drawing adds to the intimate feel of the artwork. Goemans offers us a unique perspective, inviting us to contemplate the beauty of the natural world, and the emotions it evokes.
