Auseinandersetzung c. 1930

Karl Wiener made this painting, Auseinandersetzung, with what looks like oil on paper, and the mood is as thick as the paint he laid down. There's this electric yellow-green jacket that just pops against the darker tones, like a burst of nervous energy. You can almost see the way Wiener worked, the strokes urgent, the colors smudging into each other like a visual argument. Look at that face on the left – those intense eyes and the way the light hits his cheekbone. It's like Wiener is trying to capture a fleeting expression, a moment of tension right before it snaps.
