Antonio Tempesta created this print titled ‘Juni: maaien (kreeft)’ sometime between 1570 and 1630, during the late Renaissance. During this time, European art was deeply entwined with both classical traditions and the burgeoning scientific revolution. This piece presents a pastoral scene representing the month of June, signified by the zodiac sign Cancer, visible in the upper part of the image. Take note of the class dynamics depicted: noble figures are waited on by farmers, highlighting social hierarchies. The laborers are integral to the scene and landscape, yet their identities remain obscure. This print reflects a culture where the elite commissioned art that idealized nature and rural life. It prompts us to think about who is seen and unseen, whose stories are told, and whose are left out. Consider how our contemporary perspectives shape our interpretation of historical works such as this, as we recognize both its beauty and its embedded social narratives.
