Curatorial notes

This is a reproduction of a photographic portrait of Daniel O’Connell, made by W. Lawrence. The image of O'Connell is presented within a book opened at the title page of "Life and Times of John Hurley". Daniel O'Connell was an Irish political leader in the first half of the 19th century. He campaigned for Catholic emancipation, the right for Catholics to sit in the Westminster Parliament, which was granted in 1829. After this success, he campaigned for the repeal of the Act of Union, which politically integrated Ireland and Great Britain, and the establishment of a devolved Irish Parliament. Lawrence's image of O'Connell in middle age projects an aura of respectability. He is depicted wearing a smart double-breasted coat and seated in a grand chair, projecting a statesmanlike persona appropriate to his position as a leader. To fully understand the meaning of this image, we can consult a number of research resources, including books, archives, and databases.
