Panayiotis Tetsis created this painting of a landscape of Stage Ardittos, using oil on canvas. Oil paint is traditionally made by mixing pigment with linseed oil, a process that dates back centuries. Here, Tetsis appears to have applied the paint in a fairly dry state, creating a matte, chalky surface. It’s a fairly straightforward technique, but the effect is quite striking. The muted tones – pale blues, grays, and browns – evoke a sense of quietude, as does the subject matter; it's a view from above, rooftops receding into the distance. This vantage point suggests a personal connection with the scene, as if the artist were looking out from his own home. The application of the paint, while not overly labored, suggests that Tetsis’s skill was built up over time, practice, and patient observation. In the end, it’s his mastery of the material that allows the work to convey such a peaceful sense of place.
