Lazzaro Tavarone made this small drawing of Andalo di Negro, the poet and astrologer, using pen and brush, with gray wash, on paper. The sketchiness of the drawing is notable, with a grid showing faintly, as if the artist wanted to accurately scale up the drawing at a later date. Tavarone used an economy of line to depict the figure, with darker washes to emphasize the fall of the drapery, and the sitter's features. The globe to the right of the figure, reinforces his occupation and status. Although seemingly quick, the drawing required skill and practice. As a preparatory drawing, the use of pen and wash allowed for corrections and changes, to capture the likeness of the sitter. The drawing's material presence is a reminder of the artist's labor. By understanding the artist's process and the drawing's materiality, we gain a deeper appreciation for its cultural and historical context, moving beyond traditional notions of fine art.
