This woodblock print, showing a man in a bowler hat and umbrella alongside a woman in a kimono, was made by Takeuchi Keishu. He probably carved and printed each color separately. I love the way the figures are placed, giving a sense of depth and perspective, but the whole thing feels very flat. It's like a beautiful stage set, isn't it? The texture of the paper is so delicate and the colors are so muted, it's as though the whole scene is fading into a dream. The details in the woman's kimono, for example, are incredible. It's like a little painting within a painting. It reminds me of Utamaro, another Japanese printmaker, in the way he captured fleeting moments of beauty and everyday life. But here, the mix of Japanese and Western styles adds another layer of meaning. It’s all so ambiguous, and all the more powerful for it.
