Christian Kongstad Petersen made this print called 'Three Figures in a Garden' using etching in Denmark around the turn of the 20th century. The image evokes the symbolist movement with its evocative mood and ambiguous symbolism. But it is also possible to see it as a work of social commentary. The three figures appear anonymous, almost like shadows, their features obscured by heavy lines. The dark and claustrophobic garden setting adds to the sense of unease. Denmark, at this time, was experiencing rapid industrialization and urbanization. This print may reflect a sense of alienation and dehumanization that accompanied these changes. Perhaps the three figures represent ordinary people, lost and overwhelmed in the face of modernity. To understand this work fully, one could research the cultural context of Denmark at the time, exploring literary and philosophical trends, as well as exhibition histories in Copenhagen. In doing so, one might uncover the artist’s social and political views.
