Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis made this beautiful, ethereal piece "Prelude" sometime around 1908, using what looks like pencil and possibly a touch of ink. It feels like a dreamscape; the kind that hovers just between waking and sleep. The surface is alive with tiny, deliberate marks. Look closely at how he builds up the form of the boat or… is it an island? It's covered in these short, rhythmic strokes, like scales or feathers. Each mark feels like a breath, a tiny decision made in the moment. The way the light emanates from the top of the picture is so delicate, almost as if it's being exhaled onto the paper. Ciurlionis was also a composer, and you can see that musicality here: the repetition of forms, the subtle variations in tone, the way the image seems to build to a crescendo of light. It reminds me a little of Odilon Redon, with its dreamy symbolism and quiet intensity. But Ciurlionis has a distinct voice, one that speaks of unseen worlds and the hidden rhythms of the soul.
