Reijer Stolk made this drawing with graphite on paper, maybe as a study, maybe as something else entirely. I am curious about the dome of the building, which seems to be offset by a rowing boat. You can almost feel Stolk’s hand moving across the paper. The lines are tentative, searching, as if he’s trying to capture a fleeting thought or impression. Maybe he was thinking about something completely different. I like the sense of uncertainty in this piece, it leaves room for the viewer to project their own ideas and interpretations onto the image. It reminds me of other artists like Guston and Twombly, who also embraced imperfection and celebrated the process of making. Ultimately, art-making is all about experimentation and dialogue, with yourself and other artists.
