Curator: Before us, we have William Tucker's "Sleeping Musician," a substantial sculpture in the Tate collection. Editor: It strikes me as primordial—almost geological. The textured, greenish surface feels ancient and heavy. Curator: Tucker is renowned for how his works grapple with the human form, often blurring the lines between abstraction and figuration. Here, that ambiguous form invites contemplation. Editor: Does it, though? The title suggests a figure, but I see a commentary on the exploitation of labor, the musician collapsed, devoid of agency. Is it about the death of artistry? Curator: Perhaps, but I see something more universal: the resting creative spirit. The green patina can be read as a symbol for growth and renewal. It embodies potential. Editor: Or maybe the artist, or perhaps the musician, is burdened by historical context and the weight of political expectations? Curator: I think it embodies potential...it's a testament to the many ways that art holds power and meaning. Editor: Indeed, and it is a powerful reminder that art is not created in a vacuum.

In the 1960s William Tucker was one of the pioneers of abstract sculpture in Britain. However, by the 1980s, he had abandoned his technique of assembling works out of steel and timber and began modelling directly in plaster and clay. He developed a new interest in the human form, which was directly linked to his change in technique. Tucker observed that ‘modelling is the most direct way of understanding the human body’. Here the rugged, lumpen surface of the sleeping musician’s face recalls the heavy features of Picasso’s monumental painted and sculpted figures. William Tucker was born in Cairo in 1935. He grew up in Britain and now lives in the United States. Gallery label, August 2004
