Ch. Perrin made this print, *Gezicht op kasteel Ghlin,* with a keen eye for rendering the details of the landscape with a monochromatic palette. I can imagine Perrin outside, sketching in the landscape, absorbing the scene, and finding the right marks to convey the textures and forms. The stark, slender trees that frame the castle are drawn with such care. I feel like Perrin knew those trees personally. Looking at the reflection of the castle in the water, I get a sense of how the surface of the water becomes a kind of mirror, distorting and abstracting the image. What could Perrin have been thinking about when he made this? About the nature of vision itself, perhaps? Prints like this one remind me that artists are always in conversation, drawing inspiration from the world around them and from each other. I think of Van Gogh and his love for Japanese woodblock prints; it's like a game of telephone across generations.
