This photograph of the River Avon was captured by Frits Freerks Fontein Fz. sometime in the early 20th century. It’s printed in sepia tones, which gives it that old-timey feel, but it also makes you focus on the composition. The scene is bisected by the river, snaking its way between the hills. The banks are lined with pathways, suggesting human intervention in this natural landscape. There's a striking balance between light and shadow, especially on the water's surface, where the reflections create an almost abstract pattern. Look at how the texture of the hills contrasts with the smooth surface of the river. Fontein's composition draws the eye along the river's course. I'm reminded a bit of the work of Alfred Stieglitz, another photographer who was interested in the way that landscapes could evoke emotion and meaning. This image is a conversation between nature, industry, and art. It is open for our interpretation.
