Tadeusz Makowski made this painting of a small town, and a wagon full of children, probably in the early 20th century, with oil on canvas. Look how the paint is applied, like buttery slabs of color defining form and space. I can imagine Makowski layering those strokes, pushing and pulling at the surface, trying to evoke a kind of childlike wonder. He was really into folk art and the naivety of children's drawings, so maybe he wanted to tap into that directly? Notice how the figures seem both present and a little ghostly? The edges of everything are soft, the colors muted, creating this dreamy atmosphere. It feels almost like a memory. I think of other painters, like Bonnard, who use color and light to create these intimate, personal worlds. Artists are always responding to each other, building on what came before, and adding their own weirdness. It’s like a big conversation that never ends, full of half-finished thoughts and beautiful mistakes.
