Jaap Weyand made this design for a stained glass window with colored pencil and crayon on paper. I love that this is just a study, like, before the real thing. You can see all the colored shapes, puzzle pieces, and how they’re neatly divided by lead lines. The lion and horse are butting heads, a gold beast against a silver one, and it makes you wonder what Jaap was thinking, what kind of place he imagined it for. Was it meant for some grand hall, a place of power? Or maybe a school? It's pretty cool how he made something that feels both solid and totally dreamy with simple tools. Weyand was part of this whole movement of artists exploring craft, which is really interesting to me. And, of course, stained glass goes way back, so it’s like he’s in conversation with all these other artists across time. He invites us to consider the relationship between the sketch and the final artwork, inviting us to imagine the possibilities of color and light.
